Welcome to Slovak centre - Ireland

The Slovak Centre - Ireland is a registered non-profit, politically independent organisation established in November 2006 by a group of Slovak volunteers. The Slovak Embassy in Dublin fully acknowledges the honourable efforts of the Slovak Centre – Ireland and we have established very good co-operation.
As Slovakia is a new EU member state with equal work and free movement opportunities in the Republic of Ireland , the Slovak Centre – Ireland feel both pride and responsibility to represent our country as well as raise the profile of Slovakia as an independent state in its own right.
With this in mind, the Slovak Centre – Ireland aims include:
  • To unite the Slovak community living in Ireland
  • To establish a multifunction representative Slovak Centre in Dublin
  • To provide services to Slovak community based on natural interests and needs
  • To establish and maintain nationwide network of volunteers and supporters
  • To represent Slovak interests in all aspects (employment, education, accommodation, tourism, culture, entrepreneurship, etc.)
  • To boost the general public’s opinion about Slovakia on a whole
  • To develop co-operation with other communities and other organisations
Our main activities consist in three projects:
  • The Educational Centre for Slovak Children in Dublin
  • The folklore group Ostroha
  • Legal Support services
Beside these projects, the SKC-IRL regularly attends various presentations, exhibitions and official meetings often dealing with the basic issues of Slovaks living in Ireland /Holiday World Show, Festival of World Cultures, Dun Laoghaire, network meetings, Slovak evenings in Dublin, meeting with Slovak and Irish presidents.

The Educational Centre for Slovak Children in Dublin functions as a weekend school for children who meet their peers in classes and get the individual attention of Slovak teachers. Our volunteers organise a regular celebration of   International Children’s day, a St. Nicholas party for the children from the centre and others and this year they have already celebrated Shrovetide  (the period known as Faschiang between 6 January and Ash Wednesday typified by carnivals followed by 40 days of fasting).  VIDEO link

The Slovak Centre - Ireland also represents the community and the country in the area of culture. Our folklore group Ostroha consists of dancers, singers and musicians who rehearse several times a week. There are two bands of singers – a male and a female band, which is a rare find even in Slovakia. Ostroha plans to perform at festivals in Slovakia this year too. Their performance last year at the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire was a great success. While  Slovaks in Ireland present themselves through their culture and education, the need to solve everyday issues gave rise to the Legal Support services. Since October 2008 this still very young project has managed to solve over 200  cases of unfair treatment and discrimination against Slovaks living in Ireland.  These mainly included industrial relations and tenancy issues. The latest report can be viewed below.
Slovak Centre - Ireland currently plays an important role in supporting the Slovak community and in the future we would like to achieve closer cooperation with the governing bodies of cities where greater numbers of Slovaks live.
